Austrian Film Institute

The Austrian Film Institute is a federal institution for the support of cultural cinema films and for strengthening the Austrian film industry.

The annual budget is EUR 20 million. The maximum amount of subsidy is EUR 800 000.

Subsidies are granted for project development, material development, production and for Austrian films or international co-productions developed by an Austrian production company.

International co-productions are eligible for funding if the Austrian co-production partner fulfils certain eligibility criteria and the project complies with the provisions of an intergovernmental film agreement to this effect. In the absence of such an agreement, the Austrian financial, artistic and technical participation must be at least 30% each.

In the case of an international co-production, the Film Institute shall only support the Austrian financial share, taking into account the overall project.

As of 01.01.2021, Green Producing is a funding requirement. This means that a final report must be submitted for each completed production, containing information on the measures implemented in accordance with the eco-label as part of the production.
