The Hochstrahlbrunnen (Engl. high jet fountain) at Schwarzenbergplatz, built by Anton Gabrielli, was inaugurated on October 24, 1873 on the occasion of the ceremonial completion of the first high water supply pipeline in the presence of Franz Joseph I.
The high jet fountain, administered by the City of Vienna - Vienna Water Department (MA 31), is in operation every year starting with the World Water Day on March 22 until at least the National Holiday on October 26. Every evening from 8 p.m. to midnight, the LED lighting is switched on.
The area around the fountain is used for short recreational breaks from the metropolitan hustle and bustle.
