Währinger Strasse

Währinger Straße - one of Vienna's oldest streets - stretches for six kilometer from Maria-Theresien-Straße (border 9th to 1th district) to the local railway station Gersthof in Währing (18th district). Many buildings in the 9th district are linked to the universtiy of medicine, like the the Josephinum (period of french baroque and classicism) which hosts nowadays the insitiute for history of medicine and the institute of anatomy. Coffee house culture is represented along the street with traditional as well as modern cafes. It is said that the writer duo Carl Merz and Herlmut Qualtinger met one of there originals for the character "Herr Karl" in Cafe Falstaff (closed in the 90s).
