In 1983 the initial planning of the Marchfeld Canal project began. The establishment was performed in several phases between 1986 and 2004 in Vienna and Lower Austria. The Marchfeld Canal system consists of an approximately 100 km long drainage network, made up of Marchfeld Canal, Rußbach, Upper Siebenbrunner Canal and Stempfelbach. The establishment of the Marchfeld Canal system also required the construction of 45 new bridges. The landscape and area around the Marchfeld Canal has become a well known and appreciated recreational area.
