In addition to flood protection for the city, the Danube Island - between the Danube and the New Danube - is a leisure paradise with high recreational value. A diverse habitat for numerous animal and plant species has been created through a near-natural design. The Danube Island is 21 kilometres long and up to 250 metres wide. The island stretches in a south-easterly direction from the Langenzersdorf inlet structure (Lower Austria) to the confluence of the New Danube with the main stream at the Lobau oil port. Along its length, it also offers views of numerous buildings of interest in Vienna. The Danube Island is a green retreat without losing the metropolitan flair.
