Location number: 1130006
In the originally furnished imperial state and residential rooms you gain insights into how Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi, once lived. The former summer residence of the Habsburgs was originally commissioned at the end of the 17th century by Emperor Leopold I, who tasked the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach with designing it as a hunting lodge. Almost 50 years later, it was remodelled in the Rococo style to serve as the summer residence of Maria Theresa. At the end of the 19th century it became a year round residence under Emperor Franz Joseph, who was born at Schönbrunn and later died there.
