As part of the renovation of Alsergrund’s Lichtental district—formerly owned by the Prince of Liechtenstein—the existing buildings on the site of a former brickyard were demolished. The Thuryhof was built on the resulting trapezoidal vacant lot. Since its completion, it has housed a kindergarten and a local party office and is a listed historic building. The architects adapted the design to the traditional architecture of the neighborhood while also addressing the uneven terrain and varying levels of adjacent buildings, resulting in wings of different heights. The richly articulated complex features courtyards, arcades, and decorative elements in a romantic, fortified “Heimatstil,” while the façade on Thurygasse, with its round-arched loggias and corner balconies, has a more modern appearance. By building over Fechtergasse, an isolated plot was integrated into the complex and a public passageway created; the original wrought-iron gates, railings, and light fixtures are particularly noteworthy. In the enclosed courtyard stands a massive stone fountain by Oskar Thiede with a fish-head waterspout. On the exterior façade there is a sculpture, probably installed in 1939 by Alfred Crepaz, bearing an inscription that invokes Nazi virtues such as duty, loyalty, and heroism. Matthias Gall (1893–1944), who was executed by the National Socialists and after whom the nearby Gall-Hof is named, lived in the Thuryhof.
