Donaukanal
Location number: 1020008
At the historic Nussdorf weir and lock system (Nussdorfer Wehr - und Schleusenanlage) designed by Otto Wagner, the Danube Canal separates from the main stream of the Danube. The approximately 17-kilometer-long and 50-meter-wide waterway then flows through seven districts of Vienna. Near the Albern harbor, it finally flows back into the Danube. The promenades on both sides of the canal offer an urban ambience with graffiti artworks and restaurants. In addition, several parks have been created along the banks, such as Wettsteinpark and Diana-Budisavljević-Park. Between rows of trees, there are also meadows and reed beds along the Danube Canal. The banks are secured partly by walls and partly by rock fill, and there are also sections of natural embankments. The U4 subway line runs parallel to the Danube Canal. The route is clearly visible from the riverside promenade on the city center side, and the passing trains can be heard.
