The Natural History Museum Vienna has world-famous and unique exhibits, such as the 29,500-year-old Venus of Willendorf, Steller's sea cow, which became extinct over 200 years ago, and giant dinosaur skeletons. Other highlights in a tour through 39 exhibition rooms include the world's largest and oldest meteorite collection, the permanent anthropological exhibition on the origin and development of humankind, and the prehistoric exhibition rooms with the Venus and Gold Cabinets. But because time does not stand still even in a palace of science, Deck 50 has been set up as an interactive space for science communication. In the research departments of the NHM Vienna, around 60 scientists conduct current basic research in a wide variety of fields on geological, biological, and human sciences. This makes the museum an important center of expertise for public issues and one of the largest non-university research institutions in Austria.
