Location number: 1050006
The Matteottihof was built in 1926/27 according to plans by Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger and, together with the Herwegh-Hof and the Julius-Popp-Hof, forms a monumental courtyard complex in keeping with Vienna’s overall urban planning concept. The Matteottihof harmoniously integrates into the urban ensemble of courtyards along the Margaretengürtel in the 5th district. The extensive complex is closely related to the courtyards opposite and follows the course of the street, while Fendigasse is spanned by a monumental gateway that serves as the only connection between the two sections. The dynamic façade design is characterized by projecting bay windows cutting through the structure, corner loggias, and strongly articulated cornice and sill bands. On the gateway over Fendigasse, a stone plaque and a bronze relief—removed in 1934 and recreated in 1966 by Luise Wolf—commemorate Giacomo Matteotti; additionally, a sgraffito depicting a mother and child is located at the corner of Fendigasse and Einsiedlergasse. Giacomo Matteotti (1885–1924) was Secretary General of the Italian Socialist Party (Partito Socialista Unitario). After his murder by Italian fascists in 1924, Mussolini’s dictatorship began.
